The Elephant in the Room
Beyond Face Summer Project-
Fee: £6,000 (£3,000 filming, £3,000 edit)
Beyond Face’s final strand of the Mayflower 400 Cultural programme was originally intended to be a show in the Drum at Theatre Royal Plymouth in October. Due to Covid-19, of course, this hasn’t been possible. However as a company, it is really important to us that we are able to still provide employment opportunities to artists at this time. So, we have created a new project which is to make a dance-theatre film. Each performer will be audio recorded to create the story & soundscape for the film. Performers will then be filmed in various locations, performing the movement devised/created in online rehearsals to the audio text previously recorded.
What is it about?
The Mayflower is a complicated narrative and one that is riddled in colonialism and an imbalance of power. As a company it is important to say that we were not going to apply for this funding due to the history of the Mayflower, however we decided if we were to, that we would ensure that we challenged the narrative and ensured that Beyond Face’s project brought to focus the injustices, and talks about the elephant in the room, white power.
This dance theatre film explores 6 fictional characters, each representing a significant value. Throughout the film they debate the complexities of living in a white space world, constantly being interrupted by that external voice, the system. The film delves into the barriers that each of these characters experience and how it is so important for you to see them as how they see themselves. The film is there to challenge, to provoke thought and to give voice to those who are often invisible in the retelling of history.
What are we looking for?
We are seeking a Filmmaker to collaborate with, to film and edit this production. We envisage the final film to be between 30-40 minutes long, with a shorter ‘teaser’ film which can be displayed on screens to gather interest. We welcome applications from Black, Asian and People of Colour, and ask every applicant to consider the context of the brief and our Company ethos. We are looking for someone who is a strong collaborator, who can work with the team to create the vision for the piece. We require this person to be in access to Plymouth, Exeter and Bristol, preferably with a vehicle due to the current Covid-19 guidelines of working. We will be operating with increased Health & Safety procedures, locations will be outdoors where possible and strict Health & Safety policies will apply. We ask that the Filmmaker uses their own equipment, and holds insurance for this where possible. The Company will hold insurance for the film production.
Where will the film go?
This is a not-for-profit film, created in place of a piece of theatre. We will have a ‘soft-launch’ release in the Autumn for an online sharing, we will then have public screenings in early Spring 2021.
