Our Projects

Despite That…

Despite That… was an international co-creation project with Beyond Face, UK, ARROWSA, Durban and South Roots Int, Cape Town supported by the British Council.

Throughout this project each team created work using the stimulus - ‘Despite That’ delving into why we choose to live where we live, exploring perceptions around that. The creations from both countries were then be filmed and edited into a short film.

"How many times have we been here before? We go around in circles. We think we have gotten so far and then we look back and realise that we are back to where we started. We are back round again. So when you see me, what do you see?"

The Elephant in the Room isn’t a story about a ship, or a journey to another land. This is a story about today and 6 characters who are still experiencing the impact of our colonial history, in cities that have only just begun to speak about their complex past.

Throughout the film, these characters are met with denial, reluctance, avoidance, ignorance and ultimately silence, as they figure out how to be seen and heard in a system that was never built for them.

Let’s be Frank

In December 2020, we released a digital campaign short titled 'Let's Be Frank' in collaboration with actor, writer and artist, Monique Day. Retelling the past, confronting the present, shaping the future.

Alright Petal

A sunflower, a lily or a rose? Which flower do you see yourself as? Flowers are beautiful, they come in different shapes and sizes. We appreciate their beauty just simply for what they are. It’s time we all did the same for black women.

Alright Petal? was created in August 2019 by Alix Harris and the Beyond Ensemble. Written in collaboration with emerging writer Monique Day and including monologues by established writers Cairo Aibangee, Titiola Dawudu and Melissa Saint. The set was created by Exeter based Botanical Artist Bee Watson of Wild Hive Designs.

In a world of feminist discussion, let’s make sure all voices are heard.

2,000 Stories

This is a show about stories, personal stories, those that have stayed with us and those that are currently surrounding us. 2,000 stories is about one woman's relationship to empathy and asks the question what happens when we care too much?

2,000 Stories was supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and the Mayflower 400 Cultural Fund.
