Our first production of 2023

We’ve started the year in rehearsals for our first production of 2023, Sitting in the Grey. This is a story that follows a teenager named Ashlee as they attend their first protest for Climate Justice. Sitting in the Grey focuses on the importance of listening and active conversation amongst  young people and adults, especially as we all try to navigate life's in-betweens and uncertainties. That feeling, those experiences, that is the Grey Space. It can be frustrating, confusing and unfamiliar despite it being a common feeling amongst us all.

The process of creating The Grey Space began with a week of research and development in Gloucester back in August 2022. Alix wrote the incredible script over the winter and by the end of 2022 we had our cast ready to go! It’s amazing to look back from the point of conception. To know that the thoughts and feelings of the young people who were kind enough to share with us have developed into a production that we can give back to them. The rehearsal period has been one of enjoyment, learning and freedom to express how the material makes us feel. Below, some of the creative team have shared what it has been like for them and why this is an important piece of work.

“So much care and attention has been given by the Beyond Face team to both taking care of us as performers and also to crafting a show that really rings true for its audience. One of the themes of the show is the joy of friendship and that was reflected in the rehearsal room, with plenty of moments of joy, terrible dancing (from me) and some really cheesy jokes from our director Alix.” - Charlie, playing Adult

“This project has been an absolute joy and honor to work on. I've had so much fun with the cast and crew! This piece is all about letting the young Global Majority people who don't feel heard, know that they are seen and that we celebrate them and all their joy, rage and everything in between.” - Sonia, playing Ashlee
