Socialising vs Hibernating - an autumnal dilemma

In one of our recent team meetings we shared how September onwards often feels like the busiest times of year within the theatre and larger arts industry. Yet with the days getting darker, the weather a bit chillier and the year drawing to a close, it’s also the time of year when we want to hibernate. How is it that these two contrasting things coincide and how do we balance the two?

Our answer, give in. Well, in moderation anyway.

There is an abundance of events occurring within theatre and paired with the “back to school” feeling of September, a new wave of motivation lingers to attend a new course, head to the theatre with a friend or revisit writing that piece you put on pause in August. Equally, much like the hedgehogs and frogs, nature is telling us to slow down. It often feels like we’re pulled in two different directions, stillness and moving towards new beginnings. As we know, but often need reminding, it’s all about the balance and being aware of what the seasons can offer you and how your self-care routine and requirements eb and flow with changing climates.

Perhaps the balance is one of pushing yourself to leave your room and interact with other people alongside giving yourself time and space to reflect on your recent interactions and just…be.

For me, this October is a particularly chunky month, all good things, but many things at that. I'll be balancing the joy of seeing projects being actualised with seeing a friend outside of work environments at least once a week, cooking, journalling and watching a Studio Ghibli film or three.

We want to make the most out of the two sides this season has to offer, but not at the expense of the other or of ourselves. To not feel lacking in community interactions as winter takes shape but also to not be burnt out from trying to attend every single thing this season has to offer.

It’s a good time of year to set habits for the New Year. Perhaps use this time to re-set intentions and actualise a few too. We are here for those of you who are looking for some new means of meeting other like-minded artists and developing skills. Just check out our What’s On page. Equally this blog stands as a reminder to yourselves (and ourselves)  to embrace the innate cosy, thoughtful feelings autumn brings us.

We hope that you find a gentle balance between Autumn’s busyness and the need to grab a blanket and create your own cosy burrow.
